The Person, Not the Medication

Follow Dr. Katya on Facebook

Hi, I'm Dr. Katya, and I'm here in sunny San Diego at the Heart of Obesity Medicine conference this week, learning about all the research and latest innovations in metabolic care with my colleagues and obesity medicine experts. It's really exciting to learn more about the newer medications coming out and the ones that will be available, including oral medications that will really allow us to expand beyond injectable medications.

Understanding the whole person

But something I've been thinking about that is just as important is being able to fully evaluate a person: understanding your metabolism, your health history, and your lifestyle, so that we can get a really good picture of what's going on. And also understanding the complications related to weight, and how things like insulin resistance, hunger hormones, and your daily life can impact those things. Having this full understanding helps us pick the best treatment option for a person.

The person, not the medication

There's been a lot of conversation centered around particular weight-loss medications, frequently tirzepatide and semaglutide. But I think the care should center around a person, not around the medication. What I mean by that is I should really take the time to understand a patient and what they have going on in their daily life, including any health complications, preferences, and lifestyle, and then together with them decide what the best treatment option is. Medications can be part of the plan, and usually will be, but they should not be the center of the care. The person should be.

I'm really excited to bring this approach to Rice Lake and the surrounding area when Bloom opens soon.
